How often have you tried to watch a video online and were put off by the low quality? How many times have you decided to shut your video stream off during a video call to improve your bandwidth? Did you, by any chance, notice that your big expensive new 4K tv is showing you subpar content?

Today more than ever we spend a lot of time in front of videos. Students are attending online remote courses and improving their knowledge by watching tutorials. We work from home, we meet online. All the content we used to watch on tv is now streamed online. We do watch more and more videos from our devices and from our smart TVs. All of this is possible thanks to pervasive internet connectivity and modern lossy video compression. [1,2]

What if we could have better quality in calls, in sports, and movies without any change in our habits or devices?

At www.small-pixels.com we train artificial neural networks to improve the quality of videos. Our AI is continuously watching videos of any quality and resolution and learns to output the best quality possible.

As researchers, we worked on video enhancement since 2010. Our vision is that we do not want anybody to change their tech or video streaming pipeline. We are not proposing a new codec that everybody should adopt with a costly migration. We are training the models to best suit your needs. Our approach is agnostic of the video codec used. We are teaching our AI [Galteri’17, Galteri’20] to deal with videos no matter how their frames were encoded and decoded. Human experts in visual quality consistently scored our reconstructions higher than compressed frames. Depending on the use case we can obtain the same visual quality with a compression ranging from 1.5x to 10x.

Companies heavily relying on video for their business can improve the quality of their user experience by at the same time cutting costs related to bandwidth.
