EGIDERMA: advanced textured fiber dressing

by Rossella Dorati, Enrica Chiesa e Erika Maria Tottoli from Biofiber project of Università degli Studi di Pavia

Hypertrophic scars are common complications of burn injury and other soft tissue injuries; they can result from complications like infection or inflammation of wounds. Depending on the wounding mechanism, the scarring wound healing response has a pathological spectrum, ranging from cosmetic annoyance to grave functional impairment (i.e. scar traction across joints, impeding facial muscular movement). Although hypertrophic scars can occur anywhere on the body, when the wound occurs over a joint, where the injury is subject to tension and motion, it’s more likely to develop a hypertrophic scar. Such pathological scarring can lead to severe functional impairment, psychological morbidity, and costly long-term healthcare.

BioFiber team developed efficient advanced dressing that prevents hypertrophic scar. Our focus today is, within wound care, producing a preventive advanced care wound dressing to prevent scarring and modulate functional impairment.

The product combines a sophisticated texture, to guarantee optimal wound management, with an ancillary action of active agents that prevent scarring and infections. It is developed with properties specific for treating complex wounds, like burns or any wounds naturally inclined to develop scarring.

Egiderma is a new generation of advanced textured highly absorbent medicated dressings, which features patented fiber technology. Egiderma combines a sophisticated texture, to guarantee optimal moisture balance, flexibility and conformability, with an ancillary action of agents for preventing hypertrophic scars and infections. Egiderma is developed with properties specific for treating complex wounds like burns and more.

The continuous fine micro-and nano-sized fibers make up Egiderma fabric to achieve a controlled release of both antifibrotic and antibiotic agents for 3 days preventing the onset of hypertrophic scars.

The dressing shape was designed to make Egiderma totally adaptable to the human anatomy and it is fittable to any part of the body. The chosen shape allows covering the body entirely, it adapts to all curves and jointures, and it fits the facial features too.

The dressing texture has both an aesthetic and functional purpose. The rounded pattern is ideal for flat surfaces that tend to undergo linear deformation such as shoulders, neck and hips. The empty spaces give perfect adaptability even to surfaces with concavity, such as the lumbar area. The texture facilitates a vertical exudate absorption avoiding polling and leaking onto wound edges and peri-wound skin, reducing the risk of maceration and infections and it creates an optimal healing environment promoting an undisturbed healing environment for wounds.
